What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
The distinctions between counselling and psychotherapy can be subtle, and the terms are often used interchangeably. Counselling and psychotherapy are both talking therapies designed to help navigate life's challenges and improve mental wellbeing. Counselling can be useful for specific issues or concerns that may be causing distress in the present and there may be a specific goal in mind. Counselling can be helpful when dealing with specific life events, relationship issues, or transitions. Psychotherapy is a type of counselling and explores difficulties that may have roots in the past. The aim of psychotherapy is to gain deeper personal insight. Psychotherapy can be, but is not always, a longer-term process, promoting self-discovery and addressing historical issues that may be contributing to current to emotional challenges.
What happens in a counselling session?
Counselling sessions are held at the same time every week. In the sessions, you can bring whatever it is you wish to explore and the space is yours to shape. That does not mean that you will be expected to guide the sessions on your own, counselling is a collaborative process. In our sessions, we may also explore your thoughts and feelings that may not always be immediately apparent. Think of it as shining a light on aspects that might influence your life without you being fully aware of them. This process can bring about valuable insights, leading to a deeper understanding of yourself and the potential for positive change. Together, we navigate this exploration in a supportive and gradual way.
How do I know if I need counselling?
Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low or stuck are common signs that counselling might be helpful. You may have a particular problem that you wish to explore, or a more general feeling of something not being quite right. Counselling can help explore these feelings and help create positive change.
How long does counselling last?
I work with an open-ended approach, which means that the duration of our work is entirely in your hands. That may mean that you have no end point in mind, or that you wish to commit to a certain amount of sessions. The decision to finish counselling is entirely your choice, and when you feel ready.
Can I bring someone with me?
You may want someone to come with you to the counselling offices for the first time and then ask them to meet you afterwards. There is no waiting area, but lots of coffee shops or the library near by. It is better not to have another person in the room, as this may stop you talking openly and honestly.
What happens in the first session?
It is natural to have some trepidation about the first counselling session. When you enter the building, the welcoming receptionists may ask if they can help direct you. You need not say why you are there and simply say that you are here to see Nikki. You may then wait in the waiting area until your appointment time where I will meet you and show you to the room. Once in the counselling room I may take some more details from you and we may take some time to see if the way that I work it right for your needs.
How do I choose the right therapist?
Choosing a therapist is a personal decision and it's important to find someone you feel comfortable with and trust. It helps to have an understanding of the approach the therapist offers and to ask questions if you are unsure.
Is there a toilet I can use?
There is a toilet available on the first floor which is accessible by lift or stairs. There is an accessible toilet on ground floor.
Where are you based?
I am based at the Eastway Enterprise Centre, Hitchin, providing a private and welcoming space for face-to-face sessions. The room is designed to ensure confidentiality during our in-person sessions. I also offer video and telephone counselling, providing accessible and convenient options for those who may prefer remote sessions.
